This Thesis objects to study the capoeira practice in Recife between 1880 and 1911. We discuss the meanings of capoeira in the passage of the XIX to the XX century, analyzing the representations elaborated about it by Recife‟s intellectuals. To this purposes the thesis analyzes the writings of these intellectuals, as well as newspapers, justice and police codes, municipal Law, and the Penal Codes of the Brazilian Empire and the Brazilian Republic. These sources were extensively consulted and allowed the analyses of the capoeira practice n Recife, as well as the repressive police action. In the constant fight between capoeira‟s games and disciplinary rules we saw different forms of relationship: negotiations among capoeira men, police sectors, the Army and politicians.
