Resumo: With the passage of time is perceived a progressive interest in the preservation of cultural heritage as a whole, as an important maker of memory of a specific community. This paper investigates the relationship between this cultural heritage and memory from the perspective of the residents of the city of Sabara, located twenty-two kilometers from the center of state capital, Belo Horizonte. Sabara has an important collection of three phases of the Minas Gerais baroque, which makes the city a respectable example of a national and state historical process. In the first part of the work will be given more attention to conceptual issues of the themes that will be the guiding basis for the proposed research. The literature review is a fundamental point in this first part of the conceptual work. To appropriate concepts the author relates the preservation of legal instruments with a history of IPHAN and preservation laws in the city, all illustrated with examples found in Sabara. In this part a survey of public policy at the national and municipal level, including cultural ICMS here over the years will be done. Therefore, the work will be guided by three different methodologies, the first will be the application of half-open questionnaires to residents, the second will be applied by the questionnaire methodology of fragments perception of heritage, and the latter methodology it comes to interviews applied to residents residing in homes listed by county and the interview with the public agency responsible for heritage management in the county.
