Resumo: Since the official confirmation of the first case of Covid-19 in Brazil, strategies have been developed to contain the spread of the disease in the country. It is common knowledge that the conditions of incarceration in Brazil have the following characteristics: overcrowded and poorly ventilated cells, limited access to basic sanitation and prison units without a health module, or with precarious environments for health care. With that, an additional concern in this pandemic context referred to the spread of the coronavirus in prisons in Brazil. With this in mind, the present investigation aimed to analyze the implementation and operationalization of the guidelines for coping with the Covid-19 pandemic in the prison units in a border municipality, in order to understand the strengths and weaknesses in coping with Covid-19 from the perspective of health personnel who worked in prisons during the pandemic. This is a descriptive field study with a qualitative approach, divided into two stages, interviews with health personnel who worked in prisons during the pandemic and documentary research. The collection of qualitative and quantitative data was carried out from January to July 2023. Bardin's content analysis was used for the analysis of qualitative data. As a result of the research, it was observed that in the period from 2020 to 2022 the total number of confirmed cases was 1038, seven outbreaks and two hospitalizations that evolved into two registered deaths. 4.7% of the cases had some type of comorbidity and 43.9% were aged between 26 and 36 years, followed by 36 to 45 years with 23.5% of the cases, 18 to 25 years with 20% of the cases, 46 to 65 years old with 10.9% and people over 65 years old, 1.7% of the cases. In addition, the study made it possible to establish an overview of the Covid-19 pandemic in prison units in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, describing the organizational structure, the processes adopted by the unit, as well as the results that the work carried out by the health team together with the administration of the units brought to the prison population. In the end, it could be understood that among the greatest difficulties experienced by the teams during the pandemic, the lack of sufficient human resources to assist in the endeavor was a constant complaint and the reflections of this in the work environment were tired and overloaded professionals. The lack of human resources is a serious public health problem that can cause not only damage to the health of people deprived of liberty who depend on these professionals for assistance, but also damage to the physical and mental health of health personnel.
