Resumo: The purpose of this work is to develop an architectural project for a Women's Penitentiary with a capacity of up to 150 places, for women deprived of their liberty in the 2nd Penitentiary Region of the Superintendence of Penitentiary Services (SUSEPE), taking into account the relevant legislation, the guidelines for prison architecture and the particularities of the gender. In order to achieve the objective, the socio-economic and criminal profile of the state's female prisoners was analyzed using information from the Penitentiary Information Survey (INFOPEN), with the aim of identifying their dangerousness and the main difficulties they experience while serving their sentence. It was observed that the number of women deprived of their liberty in the country has been increasing and that the incarcerated group is made up mainly of white, poor women, aged between 25 and 40, mothers, most of whom have been sentenced to between 4 and 15 years in prison for drug trafficking. As far as structural issues are concerned, prisons have not proved to be able to cope with the demand from women. Most of the prisons are of a mixed nature and have been adapted in a simplistic way to comply with unplanned government prison policies. Therefore, the final product of the work is the design of a female prison with up to 150 places, observing the guidelines of penal architecture, aligned with security and gender needs, with the aim of making the fulfillment of the prison sentence more dignified.
