Resumo: This study aimed to understand the relationship between the prison context and the processes of construction of subjectivity and gender identity among encarcerated women in São Luís, and other intersections of identity such as ethnicity, class and sexuality. The research approaches the discourses and knowledge about the female experience in the criminal context and in the prison process, which are established mainly from an androcentric bias. This is a field research with a qualitative approach. In order to reach the proposed objectives, it was necessary to conduct a semi-structured interview and a characterization questionnaire, in addition to the data of the field diary. There were seven women in deprivation of liberty of the Prison Unit for Female Reseralization, located in the city of São Luís, Maranhão, and the discourse analysis and Foucaultian archeology were used to analyze the obtained data. It was possible to perceive that female juridical and prison experiences are permeated by violence, invisibilities and distinctions demarcated by gender. These differentiations already occur prior to the incarceration process, by a rupture with the symbolic place of the woman - passive, docile and maternal - leading to a distancing from the social order. The research has as a relevant factor to contribute to the construction of a reflection on gender issues in the prison environment, in order to serve as a stimulus for the adoption of measures capable of minimizing the problem of the invisibility of women in this context, thus seeking to awareness of the importance of specific public policies, in the monitoring of the inmates and in the strengthening of family and affective ties.
