Resumo: In the Prison System, there is resistance to the implementation of quality, innovative, inclusive and critical education, although it is considered that education enables resocialization. The main objective of this investigation was to understand the relationship that the inmates from Foz do Iguaçu-PR establish with Mathematics, as well as the reasons that led them to seek schooling in prison, in addition to investigating the conditions in which the teaching and learning process takes place. Of Mathematics learning at the Women's Penitentiary of Foz do Iguaçu, Progression Unit (PFF-UP). This work used the narrative through the writing of letters to obtain information with the students deprived of liberty enrolled in the Mathematics subject in the Female Prison System of Foz do Iguaçu-PR. From the literature review and field research carried out, there is no evidence that Mathematics Education in the Prison System is able to make sense of the inmates' prior knowledge in order to produce resignifications to knowledge, and this is due to social, environmental conditions and also pedagogical. It was also not shown that Mathematics education in the Prison System connects inmates to social issues, that is, it does not significantly contribute to their resocialization process. It was concluded that prisons have historically been places of denial of rights and a lot of censorship. It is only by law that education is present in Brazilian prisons. However, in the current situation of prison education, there is no concern with the quality of education offered in prisons, since only the number of people served is what really matters to the State, in order to demonstrate to international human rights organizations and to others. Countries that Brazil is fulfilling its role of offering education to inmates. It is necessary to broaden the academic debate to carry out deeper reflections on these themes in order to implement changes in the teaching and learning process of students in the Prison System to finally achieve the objective of resocialization through education.
