Resumo: This dissertation aims to analyze the symbolic, what is hidden in the image and what its current meaning, from the perspective of the imaginary. Take a look at the symbolic present in the self-images, produced and distributed by ordinary women in instagram. The symbolic permeates society and is present in the diverse representations manifested by the media and publicity, encouraging women to standardize their bodies and their beauty. Therefore, the theme is explored from what is common in the selfies and raises questions about the ideal of beauty, eroticism, consumption, mercantilization of the body and life in the simulacrum. We use photography as a visual description, and the image as an object of interpretation. In the first moment, we present a theoretical reflection that contextualizes important points about the history of photography to the digital era and the evolution of social groups and digital media, culminating in an effervescent visual and technological culture. Soon after, we present the method and the paths that were traced: one on the search of the photographs that make up the female selfies on the Instagram, using #selfie; and the other on the theoretical searches to analyze the photographs by undertaking a visual reading with a sociocultural approach. The structure of image analysis has as main source the selfie as visual text, taking as basis the theoretical paths based on Kossoy, Barthes, Lipovetsky, Santaella, among other authors presented. Another criterion presented is the relation between body and beauty consumed in the universe of self-image: speech, life full of pleasures and the spectacle of great sensations. And finally, the analysis of the photographs, which presents as a result a new way of seeing the existence, from the digital.
