Resumo: Adaptation is a process that has acted on a recurring form among different media, over time. Along with literature, it has "transcoded", in the words of Linda Hutcheon (2013), the way to update the storytelling. In fact, adaptation is not a new phenomenon, nor does it end in time. From the phase of propagation through orality to the digital age, it has continued and will continue to represent narratives, through different procedures, including reduction, addition and transformation (BRITO, 2006). This thesis has as object of study the work Hoje é dia de Maria (2005), written by playwright Carlos Alberto Soffredini and adapted for the television by Luís Alberto de Abreu and Luiz Fernando Carvalho. The narrative tells the story of Maria, a motherless girl who suffers with the persecutions of her stepmother, an adaptation that remakes the classic narrative. The protagonist who gives the work its name crosses the Brazilian countryside in search of the 'fringe of the sea'. The research addresses the updating processes involved in the adaptation procedures. The discussion which is outlined here is organized from three parts, divided into three chapters. In the first, we discuss the work of updating the adaptation through intertextuality and dialogical "threads" that reinterpret a text. At this moment when we analyze the phenomenon of adaptation, we resort to the contributions, mainly, of Bakhtin (1997), Hutcheon (2013), Balogh (2005) and Stam (2006). In the second chapter, we discuss how the narrative setting re-presents elements of the fantastic and the wonderful, that are translated through intersemiotics into audiovisual discourse, seeking to advance the discussion of how the narrative setting and the mise-en-scène tell the narrative of Hoje é dia de Maria and resignify "the dialogue" among texts. For that, we used the contributions of Ryngaert (1995), Lins (1978), Xavier (2003), Roas (2014), Ceserani (2006), Camarini (2014), Bordwell and Thompson (2013) among other theoretical sources. In the third chapter, we aimed to analyze how the character Maria dialogically resumes the saga, the fate and the heroine's toil, even acting as an ordinary girl, and from that we consider the audiovisual as an effect of reverberation. To analyze this aspect, we used the theoretical contributions of Martin (1990), Pallottini (1989), Eliade (1922), Campbell and Moyers (2014) to compose the theoretical mediation with Bakhtin (1997). Finally, in the last remarks, we propose the reflection on how literature perpetuates itself, reinvents itself, through adaptation, affirming its capacity to re-present, reinterpret and update the narrative.
