Resumo: | This thesis aims at the literary analysis of the works A Revelation of Love (c. 1395) by the English mystic Juliana of Norwich (c.1343 - c. 1416), in its long version, and The Book of Margery Kempe (c. 1438) by Margery Kempe (1373 - c. 1438), noting how concepts such as memory, body and motherhood are represented literarily in both texts, as well as proposing the unpublished translation of the latter work into Portuguese. The analysis will be carried out with the contribution of feminist literary criticism, seeking to observe how these issues are articulated in the texts of the two women. In the first chapter, we draw a brief overview of medieval English female authorship, discussing literature in Middle English and presenting the authors under study. In the second chapter, we had analyzed how memory, body and motherhood are articulated as feminine spaces in these literary texts. In the third chapter, we had discussed the importance of Translation Studies for Feminist Literary Criticism and for translating Margery Kempe's book. In the fourth and last chapter, we had proposed the translation into Portuguese of Margery Kempe’s work through the translation of the text of the only manuscript of the work present in the British Library (Add. MS 61823), comparing it with the modern versions of Anthony Bale (2015), Barry Windeatt (2004) and with its Spanish version by Salustiano Moreta Velayos (2012). Regarding the theoretical foundation, regarding the issue of analyzing aspects of memory, we had used the writings of Jacques Le Goff (2003) and Michelle Perrot (2015). On the representation of the body and motherhood of Jesus Christ, we will make use of the following studies: by Caroline Walker Bynum (1983); the research by Josué Soares Flores (2013); and Liz Herbert McAvoy's studies on authority and the female body in the writings of Juliana of Norwich and Margery Kempe (2004), in addition to the work A Companion to Julian of Norwich (2008) and the article by Lieve Troch (2013), “Mística Feminina na Idade Média: historiografia feminista e descolonização das paisagens medievais”, in order to understand the place of mystics as producers of literary texts. We had also used Nancy Bradley Warren’s text (2007) about the insertion of the two authors in the English literary canon; as well as the text by Lélia Almeida (2004) on the constitution of a literary lineage of female authorship. Regarding the translation of Margery Kempe's work, we had, as a theoretical contribution, the studies about the translation of Susan Bassnett (2005); Sherry Simon (2005); Louise Von Flotow (2013), as well as Barboza e Castro (2017). Through our research, we were able to consider Juliana de Norwich and Margery Kempe as transgressors, as they broke with conventional roles for women of their time. Her writings bring the female role in a new perspective of religious, social and literary protagonism and we highlight how much this process of rescue and rereading can be refreshing for the studies of literature, culture and translation. |
