The correlation, in the traditional perspective of grammar studies, is considered a rhetorical resource that belongs to coordination or subordination, it also has the function of emphasizing the connected terms. The aim of this research is to quantify the behavior of the correlated structures in a quantitative and qualitative way, using the functional linguistic approach (GIVÓN, 1995; HOPPER and TRAUGOTT, 1997; NEVES, 1997, MÓDOLO, 2008) considering their treatment in traditional and functional perspectives. The corpus chosen for data collection is D & G - Natal (FURTADO DA CUNHA, 1998), which provides samples of oral and written texts. For the analysis, the semantic, syntactic and discursive aspects of the behavior of the correlated structures, revealed in the prototype analysis of the complex items present in the corpus data, are considered as semantic, syntactic and discursive aspects, which includes alternative, comparative and consecutive additive pairs. The analysis confirms the hypothesis that the correlates present particular features related to its structure, revealing, also, its specificities regarding the semantic and discursive aspects. The conclusion leads one to believe that correlation is indeed a distinct process of coordination and subordination.
