Resumo: In order to reorient professional training and work processes in health, strategic initiatives have been proposed to qualify students, teachers and professionals to work in the reality of the Unified Health System - SUS. In this direction, the Education through Work for Health Program (PET-Saúde), since 2008, seeks to encourage teaching-service-community integration and qualify health training, with the teaching-learning process carried out in services to based on active relationships and interactions between program members and SUS users. Given this, the general objective of this study is to understand the contributions of the Education through Work for Health Program (PET-Saúde) to training and health work in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul – RS; and as specific objectives: identify the actions and strategies promoted by PET-Saúde for the integration between teaching-service-community; and analyze the advances and challenges of PET-Saúde related to the training and health work dimensions in the practice scenarios of the Unified Health System. This is an exploratory-descriptive study, structured in a qualitative approach, carried out with thirty participants from PET-Saúde, from a community higher education institution, with ten teachers (tutors), ten public service health professionals (preceptors) and ten students with different degrees in the health area. A semi-structured interview was used for data collection. From the data analysis, two categories emerged: Expanding the horizons of health training for the SUS, with the subcategories, teaching-service community integration, interprofessional education, training qualification, and the category Reframing health work through inclusion in PET-Saúde, with the subcategories: continuing education in health, reorientation of care, management processes. Among the main advances mentioned by participants in the sphere of health training is the qualification of training, promoted through teaching-service-community integration and the encouragement of interprofessional education, through practices carried out in health services. With regard to health work, the program has ensured progress in updating and reorienting care through continuing health education, providing improvements in health care and management. There are still challenges to be overcome, such as the organization of schedules and physical space, and the release of professionals, by municipal managers, for extension activities. It became clear that strengthening PET-Saúde and ensuring that curricula are centered on the SUS is a vital step towards improving the training and updating of health professionals and the quality of services provided to the population. This requires a collaborative commitment between educational institutions, health managers, and public authorities, in addition to a continuous and adaptive approach to respond to the needs of the health system. It is necessary to establish processes for continuous monitoring and evaluation of PET-Saúde activities to ensure that the objectives are being achieved and to identify which dimensions of the projects can be reorganized. The program has managed to provide an opportunity to improve health training through its articulation with workers in theoretical-practical scenarios. However, the continuity of the program in the reality studied represents a decisive factor for the impact of the actions developed.
