Resumo: | ABSTRACT: To assess the knowledge and attitudes of nursing students about sexual behavior and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) in elderly people before and after an educational intervention. METHOD: a quasi-experimental study of the before and after type. The population was 118 nursing students enrolled in the Nursing course of a public university in the state of Mato Grosso. Students over the age of 18, enrolled from the fifth semester onwards, were included. Data collection took place between October and November 2020, via online. Questionnaires were used with their contents validated by experts in the area (IVC: 96%), with questions about sociodemographic characteristics, academic background and knowledge and attitudes about sexual behavior and STIs in elderly people. The educational intervention was developed in two meetings, through a web conference, using didactic resources in the form of workshops. Group dynamics, question script and video presentation were used. Questionnaires were completed before and immediately after the intervention. The variables were related to sociodemographic characteristics, academic training and knowledge, as well as the attitudes of students about sexual behavior and STIs in elderly people. Descriptive data analysis was performed and to identify the association between knowledge and attitudes with the other variables, multiple linear regression was performed, considering statistical significance p=<0.05. To compare the scores of knowledge and attitude of nursing students about sexual behavior and STIs in elderly people before and after the intervention, the paired t-test and Wilcoxon test were applied, establishing a significance level of 5%. The research was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP) under opinion number 3.924.902/2020, CAAE 29371420.0.0000.8124 and registration RBR-3rkg96p in the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (REBEC). RESULTS: the variables associated with the knowledge of students about sexual behavior and STIs in elderly people were age group (p=0.025), contact with elderly people (p=0.040), participation in complementary activities (lectures and workshops) on sexual behavior (0.025) and current semester (p=<0.001/0.005). Regarding attitudes, only the variable participating in complementary activities on sexual behavior remained associated in the multiple model (p=0.047). The scores of knowledge and attitude of nursing students about sexual behavior and STIs in elderly people increased after the intervention. These differences in pre- and post-intervention scores were statistically significant (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: students aged between 27 and 39 years old, who have close contact with the elderly, who attend between the seventh and the tenth semester and who have already participated in complementary activities on the sexual behavior of the elderly, presented greater knowledge about sexual behavior and the IST in elderly people. Those who have participated in complementary activities about the sexual behavior of the elderly had more positive attitudes about the topic. The students' knowledge improved and their attitudes became more positive after the intervention. |
