Resumo: |
INTRODUCTION: Orotracheal intubation is an invasive procedure that can cause a series of peri operative side effects, such as cough, dysphonia/hoarseness, pain, and inflammation. Among the attenuating techniques, the insufflation of the endotracheal cuff with alkalized lidocaine solution is described in the literature, with good results. METHOD: Eighty patients who underwent elective gastroplasty in a high-complexity hospital between 2019 and 2021 were included. This is a quantitative, prospective, double-blind study. Patients were randomized into a control group (G1) and an intervention group (G2), in the G1 group the endotracheal tube cuffs were inflated with 0.9% saline solution and in the G2 group, 2% lidocaine with bicarbonate of 8.4% sodium. Patients were submitted to questionnaires to investigate the most frequent symptoms, their evolution, and levels of satisfaction with the hospital service. RESULTS: There was a higher prevalence of female patients (67.5%) over males, aged between 25 and 50 years (45% of the general sample). The most prevalent BMI was grade II, with a mean BMI of 38.1, the vast majority falling within the classification ASA II due to their obesity status. Regarding the surgical technique, it was observed that in both groups, the most performed was the Sleeve, with 68.8% of the cases. It was observed that the incidence of pain in the oropharynx and/or larynx was significantly lower in the G2 group when compared to the G1 group, in the immediate postoperative period. Also, patients had less foreign body sensation, only 22.5% of the G2 group (p=0.050) and in 45% of the patients of the G1 group. CONCLUSION: The use of alkalized 2% lidocaine as a means of insufflation of the cuff, compared with saline solution, was effective in attenuating oropharyngeal pain and foreign body sensation in the patients studied. |
