Resumo: The Sistema Único de Saúde (known as SUS) is regarded as the largest public health system of the world and, therefore, appears daily in media and social discussions. Considering the various interconnections between Communication and Health, this study investigates which are the social representations of the SUS in news coverage about public health services. It also analyzes how and in what way the System is portrayed by the press in Goiania. The dissertation verifies the representations of health system to citizens and journalists. The discussion leans on studies about public health, social representations, newsmaking, journalism and other relevant concepts. In this study three investigations were developed. The first is the representation presented by the media (newspaper "O Popular", "CBN" Radio and TV "Anhanguera"), then there's the social representations of SUS by journalists, and - finally - of social representations of SUS by citizens.
