This dissertation is the result of an ethnographic study “about” and “with” the Quilombola Community of Terra Dura, which is located in the north of Minas Gerais. As we will show, the struggle to regain part of the original territory leads to the elaboration of specific political strategies and actions. The creation of a system of internal relations, which reaches both the nearby quilombola communities and, to some extent, the non-quilombola universe, is an essential part of this strategy. Geographical proximity, as well as kinship relations and religiosity, underlie the relationship between the quilombola communities of the region. The objective of this study is to shed light on the political mobilization and organization of the Quilombola Community of Terra Dura.
