The breakdown of barriers to entry of new airlines and the deregulation of the Brazilian aviation industry started in the early 90. It created a new perspective of competition for existing carriers, forcing them to change their way of dealing with this type of market. This leads to a new concept of flight with the Low Cost Carriers (LCCs). Before the beginning of LCCs operation, there where only Full Service Carriers (FSCs). To ensure their competitiveness, other companies have been forced to seek for a better use of their resources. This study examines, through Fuzzy DEA model, the performance of Brazilian airlines in the period 2001 to 2005, and the evolution of the same carriers facing a new stage of competitiveness in the market.
