This work identifies the relationship between an Institute of Further Education and a local Conservation Unit. Its main objective is to identify ways in which students from different graduate courses can be involved in the work of a Conservation Unit, beyond existing projects and scientific courses. This was approached by examining the relationship between Man and Nature, particularly concerns about the environment and how this led to the creation of protected areas, and how institutes of further education have often been militant in defense of such areas. This survey was undertaken at international, national and local level, encompassing the first national parks, such as Yellowstone and Itatiaia, whilst at local level, Serra da Tiririca State Park was examined. The latter is the biggest Conservation Unit in the City of Niterói. Successful partnerships between Institutes of Further Education and Conservation Units were described and showed that this could be rolled out more generally in further education, and not just restricted to particular courses. The paper concludes with the needs and activities of Institutes of Further Education and Conservation Units, in particular the Universidade Federal Fluminense and Serra da Tiririca State Park
