Resumo: | Population aging is global phenomenon considered one of the greatest challenges of contemporary public health. The Stroke has a great impact on the elderly population, as the prevalence of chronic disease increases with advancing age. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of disability and factors associated in the elderly after stroke registered in the Family Health Strategy in Vitória, Brazil. Crosssection study, descriptive analytical, including 230 individuals selected by proportional sampling in 22 territories health. To evaluate the independent variables was a structured questionnaire with demographic characteristics, health status, access to rehabilitation, social support, behavior and environmental perception. The disability to measure the modified Rankin Scale, the level of dependence in basic and instrumental activities of daily living was used respectively the Barthel Index and the Lawton Scale. Descriptive statistics, test of association by chi-square and Poisson Regression analysis adjusted for were used. The population was mostly male,with little schooling, with an average age of 75 years, 66% of these were classified as having moderate to severe disability, 38% were dependent to perform basic activities of daily living a living. The disability was associated positively with 80 years of age and older (RP=1,42, p<0,001), illiteracy (RP= 2,3, p = 0,01), selfperceived limitations in body function (RP=2,21, p<0,001) and the perception of physical barriers of the street (RP=1,55, p<0,001). Long while leaving home every day (RP=0,24, p<0,001), go out to visit relatives and friends (RP= 0,39, p<0,001) and practice physical activity ((RP=0,26, p<0,001) were inversely associated. This study has show a high prevalence of disability among older people who have suffered stroke. The development of prevention and support to this population is recommended. |
