Resumo: In linguistic studies, the category called modality is defined par excellence as an expression of speaker’s subjective attitudes and opinions (HALLIDAY, 1985; PALMER, 1986). According to Martins and Oliveira [2011 and 2018, p. 324], the modal category is linked to the effects of subjectivization and subjectivity, which concern, respectively, an inherent nature of the modal category as a whole and linguistic markings that evidence this same nature. Within the modal category, there is the deontic modality, related to the expression of norms of conduct (deons = what is obligatory). According to Lyons (1977), with regard to the deontic modality specifically, it is necessary to take into consideration the modal source, which must be legitimized, coming from a common sense or a solely internal compulsion of the Speaker. However, when considering the theoretical disposition of the Dutch school called DiscursiveFunctional Grammar, or FDG, (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008), from the modal categorization according to its evaluation target, the deontic modality is understood as an objective modality , which is intended for the expression of conduct norms without the critical evaluation of the Speaker who implements it (subjectivity). The Speaker thus does not subjectively evaluate the achievement of the State-of-Affairs. Observing such theoretical divergences, this paper intends to align the deontic modality (as available in the FDG) with the effects proposed in other theoretical studies, by investigating the expression of the deontic modality in the Spanish language. Therefore, a series of texts from different genres (Poll, Opinion Articles and Comments online) and strong argumentative character were collected, which make up a corpus of specialized study (VARGAS-SIERRA, 2006), since it is configured as a small corpus (approximately 28,000 words), with a specific theme, Spanish bullfighting, in order to keep the focus on the modal events found, extracted from a wellknown Spanish journal, in order to establish a corpus of study composed of different texts in Spanish. After corpus formation, 156 expressions of the Spanish language deontic modality were collected over a period of one year, and analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively (through the program Statistical Package for Social Sciences, or SPSS) , focusing on in the qualitative aspect of the analysis, and to the occurrences were attributed distinct effects of sense of objectivity, subjectivity and intersubjectivity, from categories of analysis available in the FDG itself, as well as in studies that also propose to reconsider the purely objective status of the analysis. deontic modality in FDG. It is then observed the varied manifestation of these effects in the expression of deontic modality, linked to the modality from not only the tools available in FDG for modal categorization, but through various grammatical elements (such as verb modes and tenses, types of Illocution, Modal scope, among others), discursive (such as Font types and their marking or erasing) and contextual (such as the textual genres in which expressions are given), which allow the attribution of effects to the modality and expand the field of expression and deontic analysis not only in Spanish, but in any language available for analysis.
