Eugenics, since its development as a scientific theory by Englishman Francis Galton, was widely circulated by several countries during the first half of the twentieth century. Arising from a period of intense discussion on heredity, environmental influences and degeneration, took different frames in the composition of their proposals. We seek to analyze the diffusion of those ideas in Rio Grande do Sul, in order to understand how the eugenic speech was appropriated by the physicians as a way to provide not only the specificity of their professional field in the State, but also its role in the interpretation of Brazilian reality and predictions for the future. |
