Resumo: The study of the personality of individuals involved in criminal activities found support in scientific productions in the 20th century, which influenced the development of brazilian legislation. The study of the criminal man was the focus during this period, with the criminological examination conceived as a tool capable of analyzing his personality and behavior. The criminological examination is a multidisciplinary expertise used during the execution of a prison sentence to analyze the personality and behavior of the convicted individual in relation to the crime committed. Used to support judicial decisions, the criminological examination has become a controversial evaluation among jurists and psychologists due to its practical imprecision. This work aims to analyze the contributions to the application of the criminological examination based on the works of Alvino Augusto de Sá (1942-2019), his role as a psychologist for the Department of Penitentiary Administration of the State of São Paulo (1972-2005), and his academic dedication to Clinical Criminology
