Resumo: |
People diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may present several difficulties in daily activities. In addition, the demand for these individual’s care is continuous, which may impact their typically developing siblings (TDS) in different ways. The current study identifies possible variables on family interactions which impact on ASD individuals, using the parent’s verbal reports. This study participants were ten mothers with typically developing and ASD children with ages between 2 years and 6 months old to 10 years old. The data collection procedure was a semi-structured interview. The interviewed answered questions about familiar characteristics, parent’s routines, children’s routines, maternal overload, difficulties in the interaction between the mother and the child with ASD, difficulties in the interaction between the typically developing child and the child with ASD, comments the TDS usually make about their ASD diagnosed siblings, favorable aspects about the relationship between the children which can be helpful on their development and recommendations the family has pursued for the child with ASD. Most mothers and fathers of the participants' families have a highlevel of education (7 out of 10) and 9 out of 10 are still married. The care of the children is mostly done by the mothers. Seven out of the ten interviewed mothers are working women. The father’s routine is predominantly dedicated to remunerated work, however, it can be observed that the mothers are the ones who dedicate themselves more for other activities such as domestic work. Regarding the caregivers overload, personal time, the stress associated with the children’s care, family and work and the absence of privacy are aspects which affect most of the interviewed families (7 out of 10). On maternal difficulties regarding the relationship with the child diagnosed with ASD, the most frequent categories reported were “asymmetry on treatment noticed by the mother”, followed by “jealousy” and “call for attention”. From the TDS’ perspective, the ASD’s behavior which are more contributive to relationship difficulties are auto and hetero agressive behaviors, meanwhile from the ASD individuals perspective, “iniciating to play/ invite to play” were the behaviors which had most contribuition to difficulties in the relationship between siblings. In the analysis of the aspects regarding the relationship between siblings which promote the development of both, it can be identified a more frequent occurrence of aspects that favour the ASD diagnosed child. Seven out of ten mothers reported that they have searched for help to overcome the TDS difficulties. The demands of four of these families who have sought help were related to the concern over the development of the TDS child (e.g. ADHD, ASD diagnostic suspicion, low attention and concentration and language delay). Meanwhile, the remaining families searched for help due to concerns regarding the TDS relationship with the family members. The data collected may contribute to understand the familiar dynamic in relation to the demand of continuous care ASD diagnosed individuals might need throughout their lives, alongside further research which might allow the comprehension of this study objective. And, in addition, also comprehend how these relations can directly affect the life of typically children in multiple ways |
