Resumo: |
This objective of this study was two fold: to investigate how a group of fourth grade students writes, reads and comprehends what they read and; to identify associations between reading, writing and text comprehension. The sample frame of this study was comprised of 134 fourth grade students of the Public School system of São José dos Campos. Three methods of evaluation where undertaken (tests). In order to evaluate writing, students underwent a spelling test. In order to gauge reading comprehension, students were given reading assignments, in which the Cloze (filling the blanks) technique was administered. Both tests were conducted collectively inside the classroom. In regards to evaluating their reading ability, individual oral reading assignments were conducted in secluded environments. The results showed that 6 students did not reach the literacy level in the writing test. In the oral reading test, the study showed that some students read at a slower than normal pace and with a rather unsteady pronunciation. As to the reading comprehension test, the study allowed for the conclusion that students who had low scores in the writing and oral reading tests where those with the lowest scores in the reading comprehension evaluation. Conversely, those who had the best performance at both writing and oral reading tests accounted for the highest scores in the reading comprehension evaluation |
