This study aims to investigate the construction and the reconstruction of gender identities in the Catholic Church of popular trend in the district of Parque Sao Rafael, in the eastern region of Sao Paulo, in the late twentieth century. The focus of this research is concentrated on the memory of persons who have over 70 years of age, self-identified as Catholics and residents in São Rafael district. The theoretical references to support the studies in this research based on the framework of social sciences that has given support to reflections and analyses of the Catholic Church of popular trend interface with the gender and generation. To realize this study was utilized a qualitative research, applying multimethod: individual interviews, focus group, life histories and documental analysis. The memories of the old people and the analyses of the documents revealed this process of empowerment of gender roles as they transmit through an urban and peripheral reality marked by social demands based on the Word of God and faith. This research has shown that the religions as complex social fields, carriers of contradictions, but they do not function always as conservative forces. Given certain circumstances in a social and anthropological context, the Catholic Church of popular trend has functioned as a space of mobilizing forces, where women have emerged as social actors.
