Resumo: This study analyzes social control in public management, which presupposes the active participation of citizens, requiring face-to-face and virtual spaces for its manifestation. Its object/locus is the Unified Social Assistance System – SUAS – a system that has such aspects as structural and basic. The research is justified due to the importance of such a System for serving the most vulnerable population and the relevance of participation and social control for the development of full citizenship in a democratic society. With the research problem “what is the current status of participation and social control in public policy on Social Assistance?” its main objective is “to evaluate the role of social control in the planning, formulation, execution and evaluation of public policies in Social Assistance”. Methodologically, a bibliographical research was carried out and data were processed from the Municipal Management Module and the Councils Module of the SUAS 2021 Census. The results indicate that there have been many advances in the implementation of participation and social control in Social Assistance; however, it is about a dynamic system composed of different interests, which prevent full participation and social control. There are a number of aspects that require improvement, which implies the intention and practice of public managers and the other segments that comprise it. On the other hand, it is also necessary to carry out actions capable of changing the culture towards the view that what is public belongs to everyone and that control is a citizen's right and not a burden
