Resumo: The fifteen-year government of President Getúlio Vargas of between 1930 and 1945, the country instilled deep political and social changes. The traditional story, by naming the historical moments of the Brazilian state as the Old Republic and New Republic reflected respectively the events prior to the coup of 1930 and the events that came after this date. At the same time that this nomenclature was intended to differentiate the forms of doing politics in the country came into confrontation with the practices implemented by the government, much of what was the practice in previous governments remained in the Vargas era. One example is the public policy of combating drought organized by the State and who in this period did not differ from the activities carried out by previous governments. Some of these actions do not have the desired effect and many others were not put into practice forcing the backlanders to migrate. This led the society to create an imaginary that all migrants move out of their northeastern region solely because of the drought, finding no other factors that propelled him to perform such an act. Yet this present work aims to problematize the relation between migration and northeastern drought in order to understand through the cultural productions of Graciliano Ramos and Candido Portinari present the concepts of migration in urban areas. Also seeking to understand migration processes established in times of drought have also demonstrated the occurrence of migration in times of rain. So the drought can’t be understood ultimately as the booster phenomenon of withdrawals, there are many other issues to consider.
