For approximately two decades cancer in children was considered a chronic disease with a poor, often terminal, prognosis. Today, cancer is a disease with better prospects, where 70% of the children that suffer from this disease can be cured, when they are diagnosed in advance and treated in a specialized care center¹. This study evaluated the quality of life and the stress of children and adolescents with cancer in remission and recurrent stages. This is a descriptive, transverse, quali-quantitative study. It was conducted at Faculdade de Medicina do ABC s (ABC Medical School s) pediatric oncology unit of Hospital Mário Covas. This study was done with the participation of 40 subjects varying between 06 and 14 years-old of both sexes. As instrument for measure the quality of life, was utilized the Child Health Questionnaire (CHQ-PF50) that contains 15 concepts of health including physical and psychosocial aspects to measure quality of life and the Child Stress Scale was utilized to evaluate the child s stress through physical and psychological reactions. The results indicate that in the physical domain, children and adolescents in remission and recurrent clinical situation do not show significant differences related to the variables: quality of life and stress. However in the psychosocial domain, there was a significant statistical difference, indicating that boys show better quality of life and less stress, in comparison to girls, showing that interferes in the emotional as well as in the result.(AU) |
