Resumo: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the skeletal, dentoalveolar and tegmental changes occurring during the treatment of Class II malocclusion with the Herbst and Forsus appliances. Initial and final cephalograms of 36 patients with Class II malocclusion were used for the longitudinal retrospective study, of whom 20 were treated with the Hersbt appliance and 16 with the Forsus appliance. The average initial age of patients treated with Herbst was 11,7 ± 1,1 years and the average final age was 15,4 ± 1,3 years and for the group treated with Forsus the average initial was 12,1 ± 1,4 years and the average final age was 15,2 ± 1,5 years. A cephalometric analysis of the soft and dento-skeletal tissues was performed using the profile radiographs taken before and after the end of treatment with the Herbst and Forsus devices. The data obtained from both facial profile and cephalometry analysis were subjected to statistical analysis with 5% significance level. The results indicated that both devices were similarly effective in correcting Class II malocclusion for the sample considered. There was no skeletal difference in the maxilla and mandible when the two groups were compared. For the dentoalveolar effects, both devices did not show significant differences. And the facial profile changes also showed no difference between the groups.
