Resumo: The theme of Internationalization of Higher Education has gained theoretical and empirical importance in recent decades. Due to globalization, higher education institutions are operating in a growing and competitive environment. Thus, academic researchers, who are the main agents of international activities, increasingly seek to follow and advance this strategic trend to internationalize their careers and education as a whole. Given this context, the objective of this paper is to analyze the opportunities and weaknesses of the literature about the Social Exchange Theory - SET, based on the phenomenon of internationalization of full time academic researchers. Through the bibliographic review process and the study regarding the theory and internationalization of researchers, it was possible to elaborate a semistructured interview script. Eighteen researchers from five Brazilian higher education institutions recognized for their high degree of internationalization participated in the interviews, which enabled the codification of the categories to be studied through the propositions presented by SET. Given these propositions and the analysis of the reports of the academic researchers interviewed, it was found that: (i) there are rewards arising from complex activities that are not easily measurable and predictable; (ii) individuals sometimes make their decisions based on benefits to third parties that go beyond their individual earnings; (iii) the main choices are not necessarily rational and planned, in certain circumstances they may happen by situations extrinsic to the will of the individual; (iv) individuals decide between alternatives that, while seemingly cost-effective, bring very different rewards and costs, and are therefore not equivalent; (v) individuals choose partnership relationships with people who, in given contexts, do not have opinions and values consistent with their own. These findings present theoretical contributions to the development of SET and empirical contributions, so that researchers and educational institutions can elaborate their internationalization strategies.
