Summary: | The Panorama of Brazilian Audiovisual Film Festivals is a yearbook of Brazilian audiovisual film festivals that open calls for submissions. The objective is to outline a profile of these events and its characteristics, creating a historical record to monitor the realization of Brazilian film festivals over the years and a basis for further research and the construction of public policies. The new Coronavirus pandemic changed the way we relate, even if momentarily: we moved into isolation and avoided crowds. Activities were relocated to the home environment, carried out via devices such as computers, microphones, and webcams, and mediated by internet access. To stick to two specific examples, it is essential to associate the year 2020 with home office and remote learning. Furthermore, a direct consequence is the association of the past year with the emergency adjustments for the implementation of these activities and how these factors exposed the inequality of access present in Brazilian society. Brazilian audiovisual film festivals tried to find a stable ground. As events fundamentally defined by crowds, festivities, and realizations that prioritize physical occurrence, their online parts served as support for the in-person realization: websites and social media were spaces for general information, regulation consultation, submission procedures, and archives, with a timid insertion for online exhibition. Between 2016-2019, just over 20 Brazilian audiovisual events that opened for film submissions took place online, while there is a record of at least 300 in-person events happening annually. With the onset of the new Coronavirus pandemic and the periods of seclusion, festivals faced a dilemma: 1) cancel/postpone their in-person realizations; or 2) just like work and studies, adapt to online exhibition, joining the virtual exhibition flow of the few Brazilian festivals/showcases up until then. Some events opted not to take place, due to the insecurity of occurring during a pandemic, for not adhering to the online practice, and/or due to budgetary difficulties. Other festivals/showcases, in turn, entered this new exhibition configuration, giving rise to a panorama of festival occurrences, the first of the pandemic period. |
