The main focus is on machine translation - its advantages, limits and differences when compared to a professional. It also includes an analysis of the digital transition of translation registered over the last few decades. With this in mind, after a brief introduction to the topic, five main chapters will be presented. The first one will be a brief introduction to the topic. After this, there will be an account of the experience acquired over three months at a translation company, RWS Group, which will include a description of the host organization, an enumeration of the methodologies used, an analysis of the work done and, finally, a demonstration of commented translation samples, along with a comparison between these and the machine translation output, which is now freely available to anyone. In third place, in chapter 3., the investigation results of the monographic theme will be presented, which are organised into five key concepts: the CAT tools used throughout the internship; the types of machine translation with the greatest historical impact, such as RBMT, SMT and NMT; the artificial intelligence revolution and the way it has been incorporated into translation; post-editing, which has become normalized within the translation job market in recent decades; and, finally, the aspects in which post-editing differs from the so-called classical translation, as well as the way in which the latter is still present, but is observed less and less. These concepts will be inserted within theoretical strands such as the functionalist approach to translation and the invisibility of the translator. This chapter also includes a chronological evolution of machine translation from the emergence of the first computer and computer sciences to the present day, for a better understanding of the progress achieved. In chapter 4., there will be a personal reflection on the role of human and machine translators within the present reality of the translation job market, as well as an analysis of the fact that these two produce their best results when working in collaboration. Therefore, in conclusion, it is argued that the human translator will not become obsolete in favour of the machine in the coming future, although artificial intelligence forces scientific research to confront this hypothesis, which is why it is one of the central issues of this work - and a point reviewed in chapter 5, which pertains to the conclusion of this essay.O presente ensaio constitui-se como relatório de estágio curricular, no âmbito da conclusão do Mestrado em Tradução da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra. O seu principal foco incide sobre a tradução automática – as suas vantagens, limites e diferenças, quando comparada com a de um profissional. Inclui ainda uma análise da transição digital da tradução observada ao longo das últimas décadas. Com este fim em mente, o relatório é constituído por cinco capítulos. O primeiro dirá respeito a uma breve introdução ao tema. Após este, segue-se um relato da experiência obtida ao longo de três meses numa empresa de tradução, a RWS Group, onde estarão incluídas uma descrição da entidade de acolhimento, uma enumeração das metodologias utilizadas, uma análise do trabalho realizado e, por fim, uma demonstração de amostras de tradução comentadas, juntamente com uma comparação com a tradução automática, que está hoje disponível gratuitamente para qualquer pessoa. Em terceiro lugar, no capítulo 3., apresentam-se os resultados da investigação sobre o tema monográfico, organizados em cinco conceitos-chave: as ferramentas CAT utilizadas ao longo do estágio curricular; os tipos de tradução automática com maior impacto histórico, tais como o RBMT, o SMT e o NMT; a revolução da inteligência artificial e a maneira como esta tem sido incorporada na tradução; a pós-edição, que se normalizou dentro do mercado de trabalho da tradução nas últimas décadas; e, por fim, os aspetos em que a pós-edição difere da tradução dita clássica, bem como a forma como esta última ainda está presente, mas se observa cada vez menos. Estes conceitos serão inseridos dentro de vertentes teóricas, tais como a abordagem funcionalista à tradução e a invisibilidade do tradutor. Ainda neste capítulo, apresenta-se também uma evolução cronológica da tradução automática, desde o surgimento do primeiro computador e das ciências computacionais à atualidade, para melhor compreensão do progresso atingido. Já no capítulo 4., segue-se uma reflexão pessoal sobre o papel dos tradutores humano e automático na realidade do mercado de trabalho da tradução hoje em dia, bem como do facto de estes dois produzirem os seus melhores resultados quando operam em colaboração.
