Resumo: This study aimed to investigate the factors that contributed to the dropout of students who, despite receiving financial aid, abandoned or were dismissed from a federal higher education institution. A qualitative approach was adopted, based on the analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted with dropout students, whose data were examined using content analysis. The results indicate that dropout cannot be attributed solely to the insufficiency of financial aid but instead results from a set of interconnected factors, among which stand out: the need to balance work and study, the fatigue generated by this routine, and the challenges related to commuting to the institution. The analysis revealed a tendency toward a negative correlation between work and low connection with the academic program, indicating that students who work tend to perceive greater applicability of educational training in their professional routines. It is concluded that, although financial aid plays a fundamental role in mitigating socioeconomic difficulties, it is not sufficient to prevent dropout unless it is accompanied by institutional policies that promote curricular flexibility, the expansion of hybrid learning, and strategies to reduce the overload faced by working students.
