Resumo: Introduction: In Brazil, the citrus culture sector is one of the most important agricultural sectors for job creation. However, time off from work is a difficulty faced by companies due to high rates of non-work days that affect productivity. In addition, absence from work may be a public affects, considering direct and indirect costs to both health system and social security. Objective: To identify the factors associated with sick absence in effective and temporary workers in a citrus company in a period of 17 years and to evaluate the musculoskeletal symptoms of active workers. Methods: This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study. Possible factors related to absence from work were obtained through access to the employees' electronic records, from January 2000 to December 2016. The variables extracted from the system were: sex, age, time in the company, occupation, occupational risks, number of leaves, non-worked days from leave, and international classification of diseases (ICD). To evaluate the musculoskeletal symptoms of active and non-temporary workers, the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire was applied. Data were submitted to descriptive and statistical analysis. The identification of the factors associated with absence or disease was performed through a multiple linear regression, with significance level of 5% through the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 17.0. Results: There were 47,029 leave documents represented by 9,546 workers. The regression results showed that female employees with longer company hours who suffered work accidents and were referred to the INSS showed higher numbers of work leave. Also, some occupational risks and positions occupied by workers were also associated with the number of leave. In addition, there was a higher prevalence of departures without the International Code of Disease (ICD), followed by dyspathy. The pains in the spine were the most prevalent complaints recorded by the Nordic questionnaire on musculoskeletal symptoms among active workers. Conclusion: The current situation of the worker (active or disconnected), sex, company time, the presence of occupational accidents, referral to the INSS and some occupational risks and positions were predictors of the number of departures from employees of a company citrus fruit.
