Resumo: This paperwork objective was to analyze comparatively, through microscopy, the epithelial dysplasia present in the leukoplakia located in the tongue and in other mounth locations. Twenty-nine histological slides have been evaluated at the Oral Pathology Lab at UNIFAL – MG, they were microscopically diagnosed as leukoplakia, 14 of them in the tongue region and the other 15 in other mounth regions. The following tissue structures have been analyzed: epithelial surface thickness and stratification; surface keratin layer; presence and shape of the rete ridges and also cell atypia with the following criteria: basal cell morphology; mitoses; pleomorphism; hyperchromatism,; increased nuclear/cytoplasmic ratios; dyskeratosis and keratin pearl. The following gradations regarding dysplasia have been established: absent, mild, moderate and severe. From the 29 leukoplakia, 20 (68,97%) occurred to men and 9 (31,03%) to women. Age average and standard deviation were 52,96±11,58 years old. Regarding the dysplasia presence and final gradation, we could observe in the tongue region, 5 lesions without dysplasia, 6 with mild dysplasia and 3 of them with moderate dysplasia. In the other oral regions, 5 leukoplakia without dysplasia, 6 with mild dysplasia and 4 with moderate dysplasia. Regarding the mitosis, one of the most important dysplasia criteria, we could notice in the leukoplakia located in the tongue, that 4 injuries didn’t have mitosis, 8 had mild mitosis, 1 had moderate mitosis and 1 had severe mitosis. In other regions in 4 lesions we could also notice that there weren’t mitosis presence; in 7 lesions the mitosis were mild, in 1 lesion the mitosis were moderate, and in 3 lesions they were severe. Despite of finding more severe mitosis in the leukoplakia in the other regions, the final gradation was moderate dysplasia in a similar classification between the leukoplakia no differences between leukoplakia location occurred during this study.
