Resumo: The Education of Young and Adults has been growing in the Brazilian educational system, giving as an option for many people stopped studying for a long time. Been an assessment of the educational system adopted in most Brazilian schools, the EJA has its own characteristics concerning the length of each series or module, taking a break lower in their academic period, and the methodological approach, targeted to young and adults. However, one of the difficulties in the process of teaching and learning of mathematics in the EJA, is the understanding of issues proposed by the teacher, by factors such as language and its relation to reality, causing obstacles in the teaching of mathematics. This scientific work deals with the use of a contextual approach, building upon the daily life of the student. In the development of research, we applied two activities: contextualized and non-contextualized, can both be resolved using the same procedure for resolution or algorithm. Address three different contents: the Four Fundamental Operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), Concept of Function and theorem of Pythagoras. The purpose of the applications of the activities is to seek the speech of students, the concepts of activities that are more relevant for students of EJA, as regards the process of teaching and learning of mathematics. The results show us a tendency to contextualized questions in certain moments, and at other times to non-contextualized ones, but according the words of the students, was clear the preference of using the two approaches, as well as the application of both kinds of questions.
