Resumo: The objective was to evaluate the effect of substitution of Tifton hay Castor hulls in 4 levels (0, 33, 66, 100%), on intake and digestibility of nutrients and performance and feeding behavior of 28 sheep fed diets forage cactus based. Animals were housed in individual stalls for a period of 70 days. The digestibility trial occurred 40 days after the beginning of the performance test, using the LIPE ® as an external marker of fecal dry matter production. The substitution of hay per castor shell linearly reduced dry matter intake, neutral detergent fiber, organic matter, crude protein and total digestible nutrients, and reduced digestibility of dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, crude protein and total digestible nutrients. With the exception of feed conversion increased linearly as the empty body weight, live weight at slaughter, hot carcass weight and cold, total gain and average daily gain decreased linearly with the substitution. The levels of castor bean hulls decreased linearly time as animal feed. The substitution of Tifton hay Castor hulls reduces the intake of dry matter, crude protein and energy and consequently reduces animal performance.
