Resumo: The present study aimed to identify the physical and chemical changes on the substrates with different concentrations of coir dust and sisal residue, and to evaluate the influence of these changes on seedlings development Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia Benth in a nursery area at the Forestry Department, Federal Rural University of Pernambuco – UFRPE. Seedlings ware sown in containers with 2 dm³ of capacity compound with substrates a sample of dystrophic redyellow Argisoil (S), coir dust (PC) and sisal residue (MS) at the combinations: S+PC (1:1; 1:2; 1:4); S+RS (1:1; 1:2; 1:4); S+PC+RS (1:1:1; 1:2:2; 1:2:4; 1:4:2). Seeds used came from selected trees at the IBAMA (Brazillian Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources) centre in Municipality of Limoeiro, Pernambuco. Four seeds were sown in each container. The experimental design utilized was a completely random, with 13 treatments and 4 replicates and 8 pot per replicate, totaling 416 sample units. Seedlings were evaluated regarding the following characteristics: total height and diameter on every 30 days, and leaf area, numbers of leaves, and weights of dry matter at the end of the experiment. Results showed that coir dust is a recommended component of substrates for seedling production of Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia Benth, due to its physical and chemical properties along with durability and structure. However the combination containing organic sisal residue was not recommended for the same purpose, because it did not show suitable conditions for seedling production
