Based on documents and official programs governing the teaching of the Portuguese Language in Brazil, such as the Brazilian Educational Laws and Guidelines (LDB - Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação), the National Curriculum Parameters (PCNs - Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais), the Public Politics for the Textbook (PNLD - Plano Nacional do Livro Didático) and the Curriculum Guidelines and Proposition for Learning Expectations for Portuguese Language Arts in Junior High School (OCPEA), this research draws on theoretical suppositions concerning phraseological studies, especially those related to idiomatic expressions (IE), as found in Corpas Pastor (2000); González-Rey (2007); Xatara (2001; 2011): Ortíz Avarez (2000; 2007). This study is part of Phraseodidactics, understood as didactics of phraseology of a language (GONZÁLEZ-REY, 2012), responding to an increasing trend towards including the phraseological units in the various levels of education, both in foreign language and in native language. Taking into account the growing concern in creating strategies and methodologies that can assist in the teaching-learning process, in the development of the speaker of the mother tongue and in the insertion of phraseological units in the language classes, this thesis presents reflections on the teaching of idiomatic expressions, as well as an educational proposal, supplementary to the textbook, with activities designed essentially for Junior High School students, elaborated from the idiomatic expressions corpus based on texts from the didactic material, using the WordSmith Tools and verified as high frequency in the Dicionário das expressões idiomáticas mais usadas no Brasil (Dictionary of the most used idiomatic expressions in Brazil) (RIVA, 2013).
