Resumo: In this research, we developed analysis about the function of the conjunction e (and) in the argumentative process of the chapter O Movimento Negro Unificado Contra a Discriminação Racial (MNU), written by Lélia Gonzalez, in the work Lugar de negro. Gonzalez is one of the most outstanding figures in the black and feminist movements in Brazil and this chapter contains argumentative processes that reveal the author’s style. The conjunction e (and) indicates traits of linearity that provides a more accessible reading. We resorted to the concepts of Argumentative Operator, Discourse Marker and Semantic Coordinator for understanding how the argumentative processes built by the conjunction and shows the author’s intentions. Therefore, this research was based on the theoretical assumptions of Textual Linguistics, Argumentative Semantics, Conversation Analysis and on Quirk e Greenbaum’s (1973) guidelines. We selected parts of the corpus following the chronological order in the chapter, which reveals that e (and) is not only an additive conjunction, but also an indicator of traits of linearity that Gonzalez uses for a more accessible writing considering her activist’s proposes. We expect to contribute both to research about the functioning of linguistics elements in written texts and to studies about the importance of Gonzalez as activist and researcher.
