Resumo: | This dissertation discusses the relationship between the characters of A bagaceira, published in 1928, and The grapes of wrath, published in 1939, with the space in which they are inserted. From similar climatic and economic contexts, the novels present families being subjected to a migratory process between regions of Brazil and the United States of America, respectively, which triggers the uprooting of the subjects and the weakening of the nuclear family. In their interactions and reactions to space, the character is constructed, assuming their identity according to the land in which they were raised; and, once this bond between the individual and their corner of the world is broken, this character's relations with the world around them are weakened. Conflicts arise between internal moral values and a new, hostile local community to migrant workers. What is expected to be pointed out is the decay of the structures that bind the family together, in addition to the conflicts which appear between migrants and locals. In the perspective of reaching the proposed objective, this research is supported in the studies of Bachelard (1993), Said (2003), Weil (2001), among others. |
