Resumo: Filtering cyclones are pieces of equipment used for separation of suspended solids present in gaseous streams. This equipment consists of the replacement of the metallic conical section by a porous conical section. In this work, through experimental design, it was studied the influence of four geometric variables on the cut diameter, collection efficiency and Euler s number. The studied variables were: overflow diameter (Do), underflow diameter (Du), conic part height (Zc) and vortex finder length (Sc). The filtering medium was polypropylene. Besides, computational fluid dynamics techniques (CFD) were applied for understanding in a better way the performance of conventional and filtering cyclones. From the experimental results and those obtained from of the simulation, it was concluded that the Euler s numbers for the filtering cyclone were lower than the conventional cyclones, thus indicating that the first one operates with a lower pressure drop and, consequently, with smaller energy consumption. The cut diameters obtained for the filtering cyclones were higher than in the conventional ones, thus indicating a lower efficiency in the collection of fine particles.
