Resumo: Psychological care for the LGBTI+ population today is the result of historical processes of pathologization and neglect in the field of medicine and psychology, added to a homophobic Western culture. According to the literature, such processes continue to influence how psychological care is formulated and implemented. Thus, the objective of this investigation is to analyze how these professionals are trained and to identify the recommendations for an adequate professional performance. To this end, two studies were carried out, the first being a documentary study that analyzes how psychological care with the LGBTI+ population is described and proposed by professional associations around the world and the second, an integrative literature review that explores how psychologists have been trained to work with this population. The first study demonstrated an emphasis on the professional's awareness of the historical contributions of Psychology; the need for self-assessment; the importance of developing an affirmative professional posture and involvement with the promotion of social and political changes. The second study explored attitudes and professional skills in dealing with the LGBTI+ population, evaluation of specific training programs for working with this group, and the perception of clients in relation to the professionals' skills. The works complement each other by providing an understanding, from different perspectives, of how to qualify psychological care for the LGBTI+ population.
