Resumo: | This thesis presents an anthropological study about the development of identities among fans of Riograndense Futebol Clube, a century-old institution with railway origins in the city of Santa Maria-RS. This club, which for many years had been present in official regional competitions and which has Esporte Clube Internacional (Inter-SM) as its biggest rival, has not had a professional team since 2017, a fact with significant implications for local football and the reality of many fans. Therefore, with the purpose of understanding how Riograndense fans, in their sociability practices and in their self-narratives, construct club and fan identifications, the ethnographic text was divided into two parts, namely: one referring to data from participant observation with organized fans and ethnographic meetings with ordinary fans; and another concerning the observant participation carried out with button players-supporters (button/table football practitioners who also support local clubs) and the material objects of this playful and sporting practice. Thus, the ethnographic research, which occurred between 2022 and 2024, Given this, the ethnographic research, which took place between 2022 and 2024, suggested that fan identities emerge and assert themselves, mainly, according to a spectrum of club double affiliations, which is made up of Riongrandese, Inter-SM, Grêmio Foot -Ball Porto Alegrense and Sport Club Internacional, a determining context for memberships and forms of support. Furthermore, this ethnography highlights the belongings related to Riograndense that are driven by spatial, material and subjective characteristics linked to the neighborhoods of the North Zone of Santa Maria, an environment originating from the city's old railway villages and sociability. In this way, the sociability practices of organized fans, the chants and songs about Riograndense, the self-narratives of ordinary fans, the practice of button/table football and its material objects produced ethnographic data that pointed to forms of construction of fan identities related to community memories and nostalgic feelings. Furthermore, regarding button/table football and its material culture, it was found that the materiality presented and used in this practice creates fans and affirms identities, in the wake of a process that reinforces club belonging. In this context of button/table football, therefore, button playing and cheering appeared to be joined together in a constitutive process of affirmations of fan identities, both linked to Riograndense Futebol do Clube and to other clubs present in biaffiliated relationships that structure a peculiar football and fan atmosphere. |
