Resumo: In 2018, the rag dolls of Nossa Senhora das Dores gained prominence when they were declared an intangible heritage of the municipality. They reflect the local culture and daily life of the Northeast, and their creators, known as dollmakers, sell them to order or to increase their income as they usually participate in various craft fairs, moments in which they promote the dolls. In this sense, the present research aimed to verify how the Heritageization process occurred and what are the possibilities for safeguarding the rag dolls of Nossa Senhora das Dores/Se. Thus, it was essential to understand the context in which popular culture emerged and established itself, strengthening various artistic manifestations, including handicrafts, so that we can then advance a little further in the relationship between handicrafts and patrimonialization, taking as a reference the municipal intangible assets that are the rag dolls. It is also investigated whether or how patrimonialization on a federal scale influences the patrimonialization process on a municipal scale. The research is qualitative and exploratory and descriptive in nature. The categories of analysis are popular culture; craftsmanship; intangible heritage; patrimonialization and rag dolls; These categories guided the bibliographic and documentary survey. Data were also collected through interviews with the puppeteers, as well as some actors involved in this process, as well as with the population, in a random and non-probabilistic manner. We found that the patrimonialization of rag dolls, in addition to the richness of existing cultural meanings, occurred despite the steps that guide the patrimonialization process on a national and state scale; which did not actually result in greater appropriation of these dolls by residents; which did not make rag dolls a more visible icon capable of establishing itself as a distinguishing feature of the municipality of Nossa Senhora das Dores. Furthermore, patrimonialization did not translate into concrete actions to safeguard this heritage, nor did it contribute as an asset capable of strengthening, for example, the municipality's tourist offer.
