Resumo: This research aims to analyze the topic surrounding the discussion on the risk of exposure to pesticides and the effects on environmental health. Such processes are linked to the increase in the commercialization of chemical substances associated with the process of agricultural modernization that substantially transformed social relations in the Brazilian countryside. After the end of the interwar period, chemical industries sought new consumer markets for their toxic products. Above all, agricultural production was used as a potential destination and, quickly, the expansion of crops began to be accompanied by an increasing dependence on use, impacting surrounding areas. Therefore, questions were discussed with the aim of deepening the understanding of the origin, application, commercialization and social impacts of pesticides. This dissertation presents an investigation based on qualitative and quantitative research, of a basic and explanatory nature. The techniques delimited in the study were bibliographic and documentary research, jointly analyzed using the historical materialism approach, valuing historical-structural connections and contradictions, also supported by the analysis of materialist discourse. As final considerations, it was possible to perceive the paradox of the current economic system, since progress and regression are dialectical pairs, therefore, the monoculture-pesticides binomial announces a silent form of latent risks and inequalities. Amid uncertainty, both Brazil and Sergipe have recorded an increase in the commercialization of pesticide products in circulation, especially in the last 4 years. Some of these are present in water and food, responsible for cancer and hormonal changes in humans. By this logic, the knowledge produced in the research indicated impasses between the protection of environmental and collective health and economic development, with the State being at the center of permissive decisions and also as an agency agent, without losing sight of the influences of capital's economic determinations.
