Resumo: From Nossa Senhora das Dores, Sergipe, Manoel Cardoso is little known to brazilian critics, although he has published a vast body of poetry, novels and short stories, as well as works on music, folklore and education. His literature, in general, dialogues with the theme of memory, which is the almost primordial element for the construction of a writing that dialogues with themes inherent to the human being. In most of his works, memory plays a fundamental role in the relationship between being and primordiality, because in his poetry the lyrical self returns to the golden years of his childhood in order to stay close to what time has removed from his life. The contemporary world is taken by cardoso’s poetry as a vanishing point towards the time of childhood. The feeling of emptiness and existential loss leads the lyrical self to seek, through memory, the point of connection with its completeness. The relationship between the poet and the geographical space of Taborda, where he lived his childhood, elevated to a transcendent, mythical level, appears in his literature as a divine environment, considered sacred ground. This relationship between the poet’s consciousness and what is distant from the idealized object makes it possible to discuss sentimental poetry, since reason is the hallmark of the sentimental schillerian poet, and this is shown in the way Cardoso works with memory in his literature. Our research seeks to bring together the relationship between memory, present in the brazilian poet’s verses, with what Schiller defines as sentimental poetry. To do this, we used the german philosopher’s work Poesia ingênua e sentimental (1991), making a relationship between sentimental poetry and memory, present in Manoel Cardoso Subterrâneos do ser (2019), and thus deepening our discussion on the topic suggested for investigation. We also used as theoretical and critical contributions the works of Paz (1990), (2017); Heidegger (2003); Faustino (1977); Bachelard (2006); Bosi (1990); Staiger (1975), Eliade, (2016), Cassirer, (2013), among others, who contributed to understanding the modern lyric and the relationship between language, myth and poetry. Finally, our discussion was based on the comparison between aspects present in Cardoso work and the relationship established between memory, reflective awareness and sentimental poetry
