Resumo: The political and environmental crisis facing contemporary societies has led to the search for alternative ways that guarantee the current and future quality of life. This research study aims to evaluate the understanding of artisanal fishermen in the Caetano Filho (Beiral) neighborhood on sustainability in fishing, emphasizing the sustainable model under construction, the practice of fishing in the Amazon and its sustainable aspect in the Caetano Filho (Beiral) neighborhood. The artisanal fishing and its extension to the sustainable aspects guided by Ignacy Sachs, carried out in a predominant methodology of the qualitative research, without however leaving to include other qualitative methods. The main personal motivation for the present research was the fact that this category of workers has been constantly stigmatized and labeled historically. It is very common, even in the Amazon context, a devaluation of these professionals, as well as there is little interest on the part of society about their lives, as there is also little scientific interest on the subject. For the accomplishment of the research it was necessary to adopt technical procedures that allowed the confrontation of the information collected. Thus, interviews were conducted with 09 families of artisanal fishermen, with a semi-structured questionnaire containing open and closed questions. Prior to the interviews, several visits were made to the research site, in order to observe the exit and arrival of fishing boats, whose observations were carefully recorded with the points observed, especially with regard to the equipment used by the fishermen, both in the sense of the fishing equipment as well as the secondary products, used for food storage, transportation of utensils and among others. The observations allowed the confrontation between the respondents' responses to the points of the notes made during the field visits. Besides these procedures, documentary research was also carried out in order to make possible the historical context of the phenomenon researched. Finally, it was concluded that fishermen do have a good idea of the question of sustainability.
