Resumo: | This work presents the results for the study based on events from the Global Terrorism Database where Weapons of Mass Destruction (also known as Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear agents – CBRN) were utilized in terrorist attacks. The number of cases studied were 433 between the years 1970 and 2017. In addition to the descriptive analysis of these events, it was presented the creation and use of an dependent variable (Effectiveness), based on similar methodology presented by Kjell Hausken. Most of the terrorist attacks using CBRN agents resulted in a low number of deaths or injuries. This observation was confirmed by the results from Effectiveness, showing that the general profile of an event that uses a CBRN agent is not very effective. The variables studied: type of CBRN agent, geographical location, type of target and availability of the material used behaved independently. No relevant variation was observed in the qualitative profile or in the Effectiveness of terrorist attacks carried out after 2001, when compared to the previous period (1970-2000). |
