Resumo: This study examines the relationship between characters and space in the English novel "The Secret Garden" and in a television adaptation, based on intermediality theories. Media transposition is a form of intermediality that occurs during this adaptation process. However, both the author of the novel and the director of the animated film employ resources related to other media forms beyond the one chosen as the primary mode of expression. We aim to analyze the different ways of presenting and narrating used by the authors through research on intermediality, cultural studies focused on adaptation, film theory, and literary theory regarding space. Among the authors in our theoretical framework, notable figures in adaptation cultural studies include Hutcheon, Naremore, Stam, Bluestone, and Whelehan. In terms of literary theory related to space, we include works by Osman Lins, Marie Laure Ryan, Giuliana Bruno, and David Lodge. Furthermore, Hallet, Rippl, Rajewsky, Louvel, and Alvarez contribute to the intermedial perspective. In this context, we also aim to recover the symbolic analysis of space in the transposition from the novel to the film, seeking to understand how space is approached in both works, through their specific techniques and tools, as well as the artistic motivations behind these occurrences and how they impact the reader and viewer's experience.
