Resumo: Salzmannia nitida DC., is a unic specie wich is representative of the Salzmannia monotypic genera, belonging to the Rubiaceae family, and it is found in Northeast Brazil and popularly known as “catucá-vermelho”. This work describes the isolation and structural elucidation of terpenes and phenolic compounds from the roots of S. nitida. Thus, the plant material, after being dried and powdered, was submitted to extraction, partition and chromatographic techniques for isolation of the chemical constituents. Their structures of the isolates were determined by spectroscopic methods such as Infrared (IR), 1H and 13C NMR (uni and bidimensional), and literature data comparation. From the hexane extract three terpenoids were obtained: α-cadinol, ent-13-epi-19-hydroxy-manoil oxide, which are reported for the first time in Rubiaceae family; and ent-cauran-16-ene; a phenolic compound: 2-hydroxy-5- methoxy-acetophenone, both new to the genera. From the dichloromethane extract was also isolated ent-3-oxo-manoil oxide, reported for the first time in the family, and the ethyl-acetate extract is isolated 3,4-O-dicaffeoylquinic acid, reported for the first time in the genera. Thus, the obtained results have contributed to expand the chemotaxonomic knowledge of the Rubiaceae family, especially the Salzmannia nitida DC specie.
